Once I’ve discovered there are problem frequencies, I’ll use Soothe, or Pro-Q 3 on dynamic mode.īut, usually when listening through the sub you won’t always hear the problem frequency area that you’re looking for. There have been multiple times I thought my bass sounded fantastic in my headphones, switch on NX, and I’ve realised there’s some overbearing resonances anywhere between 60-500Hz. It’s a really overpowering ring that causes everything else to distort and become underwhelming/ muddy because of it.ĬLA NX is needed to spot this, because headphones don’t give me the same room dynamics, and don’t sound like a set of speakers would. You’ll know when what you’re listening for comes up. Listening through CLA 10 + Sub modeġst I’ll reference through the CLA 10 + Sub mode and here I’m listening for any overbearing resonances through the speakers. I’m gonna go through what I’ve been doing to use CLA NX to reference samples and ensure that the bass is ok before shooting them off for feedback and selection for our sample packs. Since I don’t have a full studio or monitors yet (because of costs and to be mindful of people I live with), I’ve been using Waves CLA NX to make more informed decisions on everything. Unfortunately there’s only a few headphones available for this, but it’s useful if you have a selected pair, and don’t want to shell out for Sound ID reference 4. There’s also some cool features like headphone EQ, built-in to CLA NX, which means you can flatten your headphones’ frequency curve, helping you make the most informed decisions possible. It’s the perfect bedroom studio companion for making any decisions in a mix, and provides a really accurate stereo simulation of being in an actual studio, with ambience controls to change the room dynamics. It’s a fantastic plugin that gives you access to listen on NS-10s, with a sub woofer, Ocean Way HR1s, and a boombox. I can hear every flaw and nuance in my mixes.Waves CLA NX, is a plugin that simulates a studio room environment, based on Chris Lorde Alge’s real-life studio. Reverbs aren’t being masked by room inaccuracies. I have a consistent monitoring environment that never changes.
Using this combination, my mixes are translating better. So for now, I follow Nx with Tonebooster’s Morphit to even out the frequency response of the headpohones and allow me to hear everything. Thanks to Waves Nx, I’m no longer worried about needing to mix or even master through headphones! Nx removes the limitations of headphones by moving the stereo image to a more natural position, similar to your typical monitoring environment.Īlthough Nx now includes headphone frequency response correction for various headphone models, they’ve yet to include my AKG K240 MKII’s in that list. Monitoring is the most important factor any audio engineer should consider, and monitoring with headphones can be a challenge. I find that pushing the preamp drive on the Mic preamp will give more subtle excitement and air to overheads, so try that out too! If I want to use the remaining eq bands, they are there. This way I can just open it on my drums and move on if it sounds good as is. My default preset also has the noise options minimized, and the 60Hz band activated. My default preset has the input fader turned all the way up with the output fader turned all the way down, which gives a healthy signal going into the plugin to keep the noise floor at bay. If you’re getting a noise build up, push more signal into it with the input fader. Lower signal level means higher noise floor. Just remember: Higher signal level means lower noise floor. This is an intentional design element, as the noise floor is part of the original character of the Helios console that was modeled. You need to understand your signal to noise ratios when using this plugin, or else you’ll have a very apparent noise floor buildup quite quickly in your mix. Be careful of your signal to noise ratios. HLS is the single noisiest plugin in the Waves catalog. Activating the circuit adds a round and smooth low end to things that may be lacking low end, and it sounds natural without being overbearing! I use HLS on just about every drum and bass source, and at times will use it in this manner to add meat to heavy guitars.
There’s a bass boost that happens when you activate the 60 Hz band that’s there even if you leave the eq band’s gain at zero. I use it as a low end enhancer more than anything, because the character it brings to the low end is just undeniably cool!
